The mummies on display came from the cemetery above the museum. If a family could no longer pay the fee to keep the deceased in the cemetery, the body was removed.
When removed they were found to be remarkably, and naturally preserved. Many of these are now on display in the Museo de las Momias-the Mummy Museum of Guanajuato, Mexico.
